Gender and Sexuality in Uganda beyond Survival

This presentation explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and disability in Uganda, set against the backdrop of increasing political hostility and social repression. The speaker unpacks the devastating effects of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, particularly its impact on LGBTQ+ individuals living at the margins: those also navigating poverty, displacement, and disability. Framing the discussion through the lens of womanism, the session emphasizes radical care, collective healing, and the strength found in community. It also challenges colonial narratives by reclaiming pre-colonial African understandings of gender and sexuality as fluid and culturally rooted. Drawing on ancestral wisdom and the philosophy of Ubuntu, the talk invites participants to imagine and build inclusive, justice-oriented futures where every identity is honored and care is a powerful force for change.
